How to choose a football academy in Liverpool

Liverpool has more youth football provision than almost any city in the country. That is brilliant for kids and confusing for parents, because from the outside, one session in a sports hall looks much like another.

The differences show up in the details. These are the five that matter.

1. Check the coaches, not the badges on the flyer

Ask two direct questions: are the coaches FA qualified, and is every adult DBS checked? Any serious setup answers instantly. 2. Ask what a session actually looks like

Twenty kids queueing for one shot each is childcare with cones. Look for sessions built around touches: small groups, ball each or ball between two, coaches correcting technique rather than shouting scores. Our programmes page sets out how we structure each age group from U5 to U13, night by night.

3. Development first means something specific

Every academy claims it. The test is what happens when a game is being lost. Does the strongest player suddenly play every minute? At development age, results are feedback, never the goal. The whole player matters: first touch, decision-making, confidence, mindset. If the sessions in an academy's gallery show drills and smiles rather than trophies, that tells you where the priority sits.

4. Get the real cost, all of it

Ask for the monthly fee and everything on top: registration, kit, match fees, tournament costs. We are £34 a month, three training nights a week in West Derby, and that number lives openly on our site. Anywhere that goes vague about money will stay vague about other things.

5. Never commit before a taster

Your child will tell you more in one session than any website can. Watch whether coaches know names by the end, whether mistakes are coached or punished, and whether your child talks about it in the car home. Ours is free, and it books in two minutes through the taster form.

The short version

Qualified and checked coaches. Small groups with lots of touches. Development that survives a losing scoreline. Honest money. A free look before you commit.
